From
this road in the Targhee National Forest near Ashton, you can hear
the thunder of both Lower and Upper Mesa Falls as the Henrys Fork of
the Snake River drops into pools below. These are two of the last
undisturbed waterfalls of consequence in the west. There is a paved
parking lot, accessible restrooms and trails, boardwalks and viewing
platforms at Upper Mesa Falls. This byway is 28.7 miles and is
closed in winter when it becomes a snowmobile route. Full services
are available in Ashton.

Lower Mesa Falls is easily seen at the Grandview Campground and
Overlook. The cataract is a feature of the Henrys Fork of the
Snake River where the river is squeezed into a gorge that drops 65
feet. This secluded spot along the Henrys Fork offers excellent
trout fishing and camping. Upriver you can hear the waters of
Upper Mesa Falls pounding on the rocks. |
